On Saturday, June 1st, over half of the 8th grade class along with three of their teachers launched a weather balloon. For the past four months, these girls opted to give up their study periods in order to partake in this near space expedition. They researched the FAA regulations, built a box to house the payload and equipment, and designed the landing mechanism. The balloon, equipped with cameras, a global positioning system tracking device, and a parachute was launched from the Presidio. Thanks to a local fisherman, we recovered it from the middle of the San Francisco Bay. With teamwork, diligence, and problem solving skills, our students were able to complete this project.
